Only A Few 9/11-Era al-Qaeda Leaders Remain at Large

(CNSNews.com) - The death of al Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden at the hands
of U.S. Special Forces on Sunday is a major blow to the core group who led
the terrorist organization before the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

But the job isn't finished yet, the Obama administration says.

White House counterterrorism adviser John Brennan told NBC's "Today" show on
Tuesday that the Obama administration is determined "to pummel the rest of
al-Qaida." He said the organization already has suffered "severe body
blows."

Below is a list of senior, 9/11-era al-Qaeda leaders - and what happened to
them.
 
 -- Osama bin Laden (founder and leader): Killed May 1, 2011
 
-- Ayman al Zawahiri (second in command): At large
 
-- Mohammed Atef (senior military commander): Killed November 2001
 
-- Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (9/11 mastermind): Captured March 1, 2003
 
-- Sayf al-Adl (chief of security): At large
 
-- Abd al-Rahman al-Nashiri (mastermind of U.S.S. Cole attack): Captured
November 2002
 
-- Abu Zubaydah (operations planner): Captured March 28, 2002
 
-- Saeed al-Masri (chief financier): At large
 
-- Abu Hafs al Mauritani (senior theologian): At large
 
-- Ibn al-Shaykh al-Libi (jihadist training chief): Captured Fall 2001, Died
in Libyan prison March 2009
