Killing the Shepherd While Simultaneously Nurturing His al Qaeda Flock

Posted By Michelle Horstman On May 5, 2011

For a decade or more, Americans have been all too aware of al Qaeda and
their desire to destroy us, led by their shepherd Osama bin Laden
<http://www.discoverthenetworks.org/individualProfile.asp?indid=690> . This
week, many finally felt the closure they had been seeking with the death of
bin Laden. But if we have struggled this long against the leader of the al
Qaeda flock, should it not seem odd that we are simultaneously assisting
his sheep in Libya?

After the news <http://www.kpho.com/news/27739853/detail.html> of bin
Laden's death, John McCain stated:

But while we take heart in the news that Osama bin Laden is dead, we must be
mindful that al-Qaeda and its terrorist allies are still lethal and
determined enemies, and we must remain vigilant to defeat them.

McCain's statement certainly doesn't sound like someone who would advocate
supporting al Qaeda, yet that appears to be exactly what he is backing in
Libya, along with fellow International Republican Institute board member
Lindsey Graham
<http://www.thestatecolumn.com/articles/sens-lindsey-graham-john-mccain-push
-action-libya/> . After McCain's recent trip to meet with Libyan rebel
leaders, blogger Jack Hunter
<http://www.southernavenger.com/featured/john-mccain-supports-al-qaeda>
wrote:

When McCain flew to Libya last week to give his support to rebel leaders
fighting against the Gaddafi regime, the Senator said: "I have met with
these brave fighters, and they are not Al-Qaeda. To the contrary: They are
Libyan patriots who want to liberate their nation. We should help them do
it."

McCain met with Libyan rebel leaders and concluded that they are not al
Qaeda. But there remains a problem. Who is saying that these people are al
Qaeda? Libyan rebel leaders.

Are there indeed al Qaeda members among the Libyan rebels? NATO commander
and US Admiral James Stavridis
<http://www.middle-east-online.com/english/?id=45257> said:

'We have seen flickers in the intelligence of potential Al-Qaeda, Hezbollah.
We've seen different things,' he said, referring to Osama Bin Laden's global
network and Lebanon's party and militia.

Al-Qaeda militant Abu Yahya al-Libi, himself a Libyan whose whereabouts are
unknown, has urged on the rebellion against Gathafi, and Al-Qaeda in North
Africa has vowed to do everything in its power to help.

Doug Mataconis reveals more in his piece for Outside the Beltway
<http://www.outsidethebeltway.com/connections-between-al-qaeda-and-libyan-re
bels-run-deep/> :

There's more evidence today that many of the men engaged in fighting against
the Gaddafi regime have ties to an organization that killed 3,000 Americans
about 9 1/2 years ago.

his piece:

The fall of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi might see the al-Qaeda affiliated
Islamic terrorist groups filling up the void, US analysts have said.

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) that was branded by the US as a
terrorist organisation in May 2010 has been operating from its base in
Algeria, and has now extended its reach to the borders of Mauritania, Niger,
Mali, Chad and Libya, Fox News reports.

Since our involvement in Libya, it has been reported that we either had no
idea exactly who the rebels were or that we indeed knew that at least some
of them were al Qaeda linked, yet we continue to nurture, assist and fund
them. John McCain went so far as to visit and encourage them while Hillary
Clinton feeds them special halal food and provides them with radios and body
armor to the tune of $25 million
<http://moneyjihad.wordpress.com/2011/04/28/clinton-to-spend-25-million-on-h
alal-food-for-libyan-rebels/> in tax dollars.

We suddenly had the opportunity to eliminate Bin Laden, leader of the al
Qaeda movement, and are gleeful in fulfilling that long awaited goal. If we
have worked so hard , so long to take out the leader of a movement that has
been clear in its' desire to destroy us, how are Americans to embrace or
even understand why our administration and prominent leaders are
simultaneously supporting and nurturing the same people in Libya? Seems a
reasonable question that deserves some serious answers.
