Al-Qaida in Iraq Pledges Support for al-Zawahiri

9 May 2011 VOA News An al-Qaida-linked militant group in Iraq has reaffirmed
its support for the terror network's reputed second-in-command, Ayman
al-Zawahiri.

The Islamic State of Iraq announced its support in a statement posted on an
insurgent website Monday. The group also warned of more terrorist attacks.

Al-Qaida has not yet announced a successor to Osama bin L

aden, who was killed by U.S. special forces in Pakistan last week.

The U.S. monitoring group SITE Intelligence said Monday the Islamic State of
Iraq also has claimed responsibility for last week's suicide bombing in
Hilla that killed 21 people and wounded 75 others. Iraqi officials said a
suicide bomber rammed a vehicle into the entrance of a police station in the
Shi'ite city, about 100 kilometers south of Baghdad.

Violence in Iraq has declined since the height of the sectarian conflict
several years ago. But militants still carry out bombings and shootings
almost daily.
