May 14th, 2011 6:24 pm ET <http://www.examiner.com/public-safety-in-national/jim-kouri> Jim Kouri Following a sea battle between Somali pirates and a NATO-flagged warship off the coast of central Somalia in which at least five pirates were killed and about six others were wounded, the survivors claim they will attack the ship unless it leaves Somali waters. The brief battle erupted after one of the foreign warships approached the pirates' boat. The pirates reportedly used small arms fire and shoulder-launched missiles against the NATO patrol ship. The ship returned fire with a single missile, completely destroying the pirate's vessel. Survivors from the pirate's boat, once reaching the Somali shore, were assisted by local villagers and taken to a medical center in Mudug, Somalia for treatment of their wounds. Residents said that the atmosphere is very tense as pirates are preparing to fight off the warship which is still standing offshore, not far away from the destroyed boat, according to Somali journalist Abdi Hajji Hussein. NATO officials did not comment on the battle nor did they release a press statement. According to Hussein's report, this was the second such attack by foreign ships against Somali pirates off the north African countries coast. On April 12, four pirates were killed and eight others wounded after a U.S. or NATO helicopter attacked their boat near the coastal village of Gara'ad. For the past six years Somalia's unprotected waters have became the most dangerous in the world where pirates plundered ships, kidnapped victims for ransom, and killed innocent civilians. Somali police and military forces find it difficult to deal with the proliferation of piracy perpetrated by Somali citizens since most armed services are engaged in counterterrorism operations against the al-Qaeda-allied Al Shabaab, a radical Muslim group seeking to set up a caliphate in Somalia.
