May 15th, 2011 7:48 am ET Jim Kouri <http://www.examiner.com/law-enforcement-in-national/jim-kouri> The top executive of the International Monetary Fund was arrested by New York City police detectives late last night after an allegation was made that he sexually attacked a maid at an upscale Manhattan hotel Dominique Strass-Kahn, the Director of the IMF, was escorted off a plane about to leave New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport. Strauss-Kahn was returning home to Paris. Detectives interrogated the 62-year old French politician over an alleged sex attack on a hotel maid, whose name is being withheld by police investigators. The hotel, Sofitel, is located in the Times Square area of Manhattan A police source told the Law Enforcement Examiner that Strauss-Kahn was formally charged -- after questioning -- with a criminal sexual act, attempted rape and unlawful imprisonment. This latest Strauss-Kahn episode has created uncertainty for the Washington-based IMF, which has been playing an important role in attempting to keep the world's economy stable, according to a financial analyst with a Wall Street firm. In 2008, a subordinate at IMF claimed she had a sexual relationship with Strauss-Kahn. "This case is nothing we haven't seen before. Here you have a powerful man -- a very powerful man -- who may be preying on powerless women. A subordinate at work? A maid at a ritzy hotel? It appears to be a pattern of behavior that I suspect went undetected in other cases involving this man," said former sex crimes unit detective Manny Rodriquez. "Even one of our own presidents had a propensity for making sexual advances on powerless women. If caught he'd send out his minions to smear his victims, threaten them and even harass them. What makes it worse is that such men have enablers who will do anything legal or illegal to defend him," said Rodriquez. The IMF oversees the international monetary system and monitors the financial and economic policies of member nations. It monitors economic developments on a national, regional, and global basis, consulting regularly with member countries and providing them with macroeconomic and financial policy advice. The IMF also provides loans to low-income countries to help them develop their economies and reduce poverty and it provides loans to countries that have trouble meeting their international payments and cannot otherwise find sufficient financing on affordable terms. A former French finance minister, Strauss-Kahn is a leading member of France's Socialist Party and is said to be considering a possible run in the 2012 presidential election. He is due to attend a meeting of European Union finance ministers in Brussels on Monday to discuss bailing out Portugal and Greece. A source with the New York-New Jersey Port Authority Police told the Law Enforcement Examiner that P.A. officers detained Mr. Strauss-Kahn at the request of the New York Police Department (NYPD), but that no one from the P.A. police questioned him about the alleged sex attack. A source familiar with the sex crimes unit investigation said the accusation came from a 32-year-old woman who worked at the French owned Sofitel Hotel in which Strauss-Kahn stayed during his New York visit. Strauss-Kahn ran for leadership of the French Socialist Party in 2007 but eventually came second to Segolene Royale. That same year he was appointed managing director of the International Monetary Fund. Mr. Strauss-Kahn is well regarded by progressives on both sides of the Atlantic for his work at the IMF. He's credited with helping to minimize financial hardship as a result of the global economic crisis. However, his reputation was tarnished in 2008 when an IMF female staff member blew the whistle on their relationship. The IMF investigated the allegation and ruled that his actions showed poor judgement. However, the board members ruled that the affair was consensual and after Strauss-Kahn apologized to his wife -- French TV personality Anne Sinclair -- he remained in his powerful position at the IMF.
