pup> DoD AfghanistanDefeats rage across Afghanistan for the enemy.  A 14.5
mm Anti-aircraft gun was captured, along with nearly 3 tons of hash and 1/2
ton of opium, used to finance their operations were captured over the last
two days. 

Nine Taliban fighters were sent to their graves.  A Taliban and a HiG leader
were captured, along with at least 24 Taliban thugs and a HiG buddy.  ISAF

KABUL, Afghanistan (May 20, 2011) - A combined Afghan and coalition security
force captured a Taliban leader and killed several insurgents during a
security operation in Murghab district, Badghis province Thursday.
 
The targeted Taliban leader conducted IED and direct fire attacks against
Afghan and coalition forces in Darreh-I Bum and Qadis districts of Badghis
province.
 
The combined force targeted the leader after intelligence reports indicated
insurgent activity in the district. Several insurgents were killed as they
attempted to engage the security force. Additionally, two suspected
insurgents were detained for further questioning.
 
After initial assessment, it was discovered that one of the detained
individuals was the targeted leader.
 
No women or children were harmed during this operation.

Afghanistan:
 
South
 
In Qalat district, Zabul province, a combined Afghan and coalition security
force detained several suspected insurgents during a security operation
targeting a Taliban leader Thursday.
 
The leader directs a group of fighters augmented by al-Qaida associated
foreign fighters assembled in Quetta, Pakistan. 
 
Intelligence tips led the force to search for the leader at a compound in
the district. The force secured the area and had all occupants exit the
building before beginning their search. The force questioned residents and
detained several suspected insurgents for further questioning. 
 
The security force also confiscated multiple AK-47 assault rifles and chest
racks during the operation.
 
No shots were fired during the operation. 

A combined Afghan and coaltion patrol targeted an insurgent leader during an
operation in Chorah District, Uruzgan province Thursday.

Three insurgents were killed, 13 men were detained and several weapons were
found during the operation.

The target of the operation leads several insurgent groups in southeast
Uruzgan and northern Kandahar provinces. He also supplies insurgents with
improvised explosive devices, explosives and weapons used to target Afghan
security forces.

The insurgents were killed when they attempted to engage the combined force
with their weapons. Two AK-47 rifles, one .303 rifle and associated
ammunition were discovered during the operation.

The detainees were taken by Afghan authorities for processing and further
questioning

A combined Afghan and colation patrol targeted narcotic networks during an
operation in Ghorak district, Kandahar province Thursday.

The operation led to the discovery of 100,000 Pakistani Rupees (U.S. $1,158)
and 816 pounds (370 kgs) of opium.

The money was seized by Afghan authorities and the narcotics were safely
destroyed on site.

In Sangin District, Helmand province, an Afghan and coalition force killed
several insurgents Thursday.

The security force was engaged by insurgents with small arm fire; the
security force positively identified enemy positions and requested indirect
fire support. Colaition forces returned fire with small arm and indirect
fire killing several insurgents. 

An ISAF patrol killed several insurgents during a security operation in Now
Zad District, Helmand province Friday.

The insurgents were killed when they were organizing an improvised explosive
device attack.

Subsequently, the ISAF patrol discovered four radios, batteries, wires and
carbon rods.

A combined Afghan and coalition force discovered a weapons cache during a
security operation in Chorah District, Uruzgan province Friday.

The cache consisted of nine rocket propelled grenades, 2000 7.62 mm rounds
and three liters jugs with homemade explosives.

All the weapons were destroyed by the security force.

In Zharay District, Kandahar province an Afghan and coalition force
discovered a weapons cache Friday. The weapons cache consisted of 27 yellow
jugs of homemade explosive, detonation cords and other components for IEDs.

In Nahr-e-Saraj District, Helmand province an ISAF patrol identified and
destroyed a KPV 14.5 mm heavy machine gun, during an operation, Wednesday.

The ISAF patrol identified the weapon, after searching for the heavy machine
gun for almost a month.

The weapon was found mounted to the back of a pickup truck and covered with
a tarp.

The coalition force destroyed the weapon on site.

The 14.5 mm Krupnokaliberniy Pulemoyot Vladimirova was designed by the
Soviet Union after World War II as an infantry weapon. After remodelling the
weapon due to its size and heavy weight, it became an anti-aircraft weapon.
The most recent version of the 14.5 mm KPV has a 2,000-meter horizontal
range against flying aircraft.

No casualties or property damage was reported.

A combined Afghan National Security Force and International Security
Assistance Force operation secured a large amount of narcotics in Deh Rawud
District, Uruzgan province Thursday.

The operation seized 2646 pounds (1,200 kilograms) of hashish, 110 pounds
(50 kgs) of poppy seeds and 13 pounds (six kgs) of opium.

One man was detained during the operation and taken by Afghan authorities
for processing and further questioning.

The narcotics were safely destroyed on site.
 
In Arghandab district, Kandahar province, a combined Afghan and coalition
force patrol discovered a weapons cache Thursday consisting of 200 120 mm
mortar rounds, 30 cases of 12.7 mm rounds, one Afghan National Army uniform
and one Afghan National Police uniform.
All weapons have been or will be destroyed by the security forces. 
 
East
 
A combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban leader and
detained one suspected insurgent during a security operation in Charkh
district, Logar province Thursday.
 
The leader was directly responsible for conducting ambushes against Afghan
and coalition forces with IEDs and rocket-propelled grenades.  He also
facilitated the movement of weapons, ammunition and insurgents in the
district.
 
The combined security force cleared and searched a compound in Charkh
district, where they interviewed residents about insurgent activity. During
initial questioning, the force identified and detained two individuals with
suspected ties to insurgent activity. It was later discovered that one of
the individuals detained was the targeted insurgent leader.
 
No shots were fired during the search and no civilians were harmed.
 
In Bak district, Khost province, a combined Afghan and coalition security
force captured a Hezb-E Islami Gulbuddin facilitator and one of his
associates during a security operation Thursday.
 
The facilitator was responsible for assisting the movement of munitions
throughout Khost province for attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. 
 
The combined security force targeted a compound in the district. An Afghan
soldier called all occupants out of the buildings, allowing the security
force to ensure the safety of all women and children. After all occupants
were secured, the force searched the compound.
While questioning residents a man identified himself as the targeted
individual. The security force took him into custody and detained one of his
associates.

In Jaghatu district, Ghazni province, a combined Afghan and coalition
security force detained several insurgents while searching for a Taliban
leader yesterday.
 
The senior Taliban leader directs dozens of fighters in the area and
emplaces IEDs targeting Afghan and coalition forces.
 
After gathering intelligence reports, the combined security force searched
for the senior leader at a compound in the district. After conducting
initial questioning on-scene, the force detained several individuals with
suspected ties to insurgent activity in the area.
 
The operation was conducted and completed without any shots being fired and
no civilians were harmed.

West

A combined Afghan and collation force discovered a drug cache in Bakwah
District, Farah province Friday.

The cache consisted of 110 pounds (50 kgs) of opium. It was also discovered
one AK-47 rifle, one full AK-47 magazine and some bags with ammonium nitrate
and fertilizer.

One insurgent was detained during the operation and taken by Afghan
authorities for processing and further questioning.
