pup> Afghanistan MapWar in Afghanistan News reports provided by ISAF Joint
Command. Operations are reported in the following provinces:  Wardak,
Baghlan, Helmand, Kandahar, Khost, Paktiya and Nangarhar.

Abdul Baqi was killed.  He had commanded a Taliban cell involved in IED
attacks and road blocks in Wardak province.  Insurgents attempting to run
decided to fight instead and were killed in Baghlan province.  In Helmand
province, insurgents tried to outgun coalition forces while in Kandahar
several large drug caches were discovered.  Khost yielded up a Haqqani
Network leader, while more weapons and bomb making materials were discovered
in Kandahar.

In other International Security Assistance Force Joint (ISAF) Command
Operational News throughout Afghanistan: 

Wardak Province

A combined Afghan and coalition security force killed two insurgents,
including a Taliban leader by the name of Abdul Baqi, and detained one
suspected insurgent in Sayed Abad district, Wardak province, yesterday.

Abdul Baqi commanded a Taliban cell that conducted improvised explosive
device attacks and road blocks along Highway 1 targeting Afghan forces.
Reports indicated he was gathering intelligence for suspected attacks
targeting Afghan government employees. He also facilitated IED operations in
the district.

The combined security force tracked the leader's location to Sayed Abad
district, where they searched two compounds. While moving to secure the
initial compound, the force observed two insurgents, both armed with AK-47
assault rifles, attempting to evade capture. A pursuit ensued, and the force
tracked down both insurgents to a nearby location. An armed engagement
resulted in two insurgents killed.

It was later discovered that Baqi was one of the insurgents killed during
the engagement.

Also...

At a nearby location, the security force detained one individual suspected
to be involved in Taliban activity in the district.

The force conducted and completed the mission, while ensuring the safety of
civilians.

Baghlan Province

In Doshi district, Baghlan province, a combined Afghan and coalition
security force killed several insurgents during a security operation
targeting a senior Taliban leader yesterday.

The leader is the senior military commander for Kunduz province and former
district commander for Chahar Darah district. He works with Kunduz suicide
attack network leadership to plan complex attacks and IED placements
targeting Afghan security forces.

He is also directly involved with military operations in Takhar province.
The leader maintains close contact with senior IMU leadership and works with
members of the Peshawar Shura Council.

The combined security force, led by intelligence reports, targeted a remote
compound in Doshi district. Upon arriving on scene the force noticed several
insurgents attempting to flee the area. The force identified themselves as
an ISAF security force in native languages. In an attempt to engage the
insurgents without using force, the security force used a spot light as a
de-escalation measure, but insurgents did not cooperate. As the force moved
into position they were met with small arms fire from the insurgents. The
security force then engaged the armed insurgents, killing several of them.

Throughout the operation the security force was careful to ensure the safety
of all women and children.

Helmand Province

In Nahr Surkh district, Helmand province, a combined Afghan and coalition
security force detained more than 10 insurgents during a security operation
yesterday.

Also...

In Nahr-e Saraj district, Helmand province, a combined Afghan and coalition
force patrol killed several insurgents, yesterday.

A group of insurgents armed with a PKM machine gun attacked the combined
security force patrol. A coalition force air weapons team returned fire,
killing several insurgents.

Also...

At another location in Helmand province, a separate security force targeted
a Taliban leader who is a narcotics and weapons dealer. He uses the monetary
gains from narcotic operations to supply finances and weapons for Taliban
operations. One suspected insurgent was detained during the operation.

Throughout the operations the security force was careful to ensure the
safety of all civilians.

Kandahar Province

The combined security force was conducting a search targeting a Taliban
senior military commander in Panjwa'i district, Kandahar province, and he
coordinates attacks in both Panjwa'i and Kandahar City. Reports indicate he
has also conducted kidnapping operations targeting civilian family members
of Afghan police.

The force searched two compounds in the district. The force searched and
cleared several buildings, discovering 70 pounds (32 kilograms) of heroin at
one of the locations. After Afghan members of the force conducted interviews
with residents, several suspected insurgents were detained for further
questioning.

Also...

In Panjwa'i district, Kandahar province, an Afghan and coalition force
patrol discovered a drug cache, yesterday, consisting of 1200 pounds (544
kilograms) of marijuana.

The narcotics were or will be destroyed by security forces. 

Also...

An Afghan National Army and International Security Assistance Force patrol
discovered a weapons cache in Arghandab district, Kandahar province
yesterday.

The cache was found in three different sites 30 meters of each other in an
orchard and consisted of two 82 mm recoilless rifles, two pressure plates
with wires, 400 7.62 mm rounds and one large rocket.

During the operation two suspected insurgents were detained for further
questioning.

Khost Province

In Sabari district, Khost province, a combined Afghan and coalition security
force captured a Haqqani Network facilitator and one suspected insurgent,
yesterday.

The facilitator conducted IED and direct attacks targeting Afghan National
Army. He was also responsible for supplying weapons and explosives to
insurgents throughout the district. The facilitator had associations with
several suicide, mortar, and rocket-propelled grenade attacks in the area.

The facilitator was captured at his compound after the combined security
force isolated the area and searched several buildings. As Afghan members of
the security force interviewed residents, the insurgent facilitator
identified himself. The force subsequently detained him, along with one of
his associates.

During the operation, the force was careful to ensure to the safety of all
women and children.

Paktiya Province

In Zurmat district, Paktiya province, a combined Afghan and coalition
security force detained several suspected insurgents while searching for a
Haqqani network leader yesterday.

The Haqqani leader manages fighters, executes tactical insurgent operations,
and plans attacks against Afghan National Security Forces.

Based on intelligence tips, the combined security force searched for the
leader at a compound in Zurmat district. An Afghan member of the security
force called for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully. After the
safety of civilians was secured, the force conducted on-scene questioning
with residents, resulting in several suspected insurgents detained.

Nangarhar Province

In Khugyani district, Nangarhar province, combined Afghan and coalition
security force detained several insurgents during an operation targeting a
Taliban leader yesterday.

The leader is a facilitator involved in IED attack cell operations targeting
Afghan security forces in the district.

The Afghan-led combined security force searched for the leader at a compound
in the district, where they cleared several buildings and interviewed
residents. Several individuals were identified and detained as a result of
on-scene questioning.

During the operation the force discovered and safely destroyed fifteen
pounds of wet opium.

No shots were fired and no civilians were harmed during this operation
