May 24, 2011 Somalia Seizes 2 Foreign Planes Carrying $3.6 Million 24 May 2011 VOA News The Somali government has seized two foreign planes that landed in Mogadishu Tuesday carrying $3.6 million in cash. Interior Minister Abdi Shakur Hassan Farah told VOA the government arrested six crew members from the planes, including citizens from the United States, Britain and Kenya. Farah said the government had cleared the planes to land. But authorities grew suspicious after the suspects transferred briefcases from one aircraft to the other. The minister said security officials discovered cash in the briefcases. Officials are conducting an investigation. It is not clear why the planes were carrying so much cash. Planes or helicopters are often used to transport ransom payments to Somali pirates who have hijacked foreign ships. In most cases, the ransom money is airdropped in a container to pirates on the ground.
