GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Just as meetings continue in Cairo and Gaza City, Fatah
and Hamas officials met in Turkey's capital on Saturday, for discussions on
establishing an on-the-ground unity in a simultaneous process to the
political reunification of the rival parties.

Fatah lawmaker Majed Abu Shammaleh spoke with Ma'an, and described the
dialogue process in Ankara as "positive and constructive," noting the
presence of leftist factions the Democratic and Popular Fronts for the
Liberation of Palestine, as well as independent political officials.

Like meetings in Gaza which took place Sunday, the Ankara sit down, Aby
Shammaleh said, "focused on ending division and imposing conciliation on the
ground by implementing practical steps ... and creating confidence in the
process."

The Palestinian political arena has been polarized since a 2007 split
between Fatah and Hamas, which saw the latter take control over the Gaza
Strip following a year of infighting over control of the Palestinian
Authority, which Hamas had won a majority in during 2006 elections, though
boycotts by the international community forced a unity government and split
agenda.
