NEW YORK (TheStreet <http://www.thestreet.com> ) -- Google(GOOG
<http://www.thestreet.com/quote/GOOG.html> ) was the victim of a China-based
cyber attack attempt that targeted senior U.S. officials, Chinese political
activists and others, the company said Wednesday in a blog post.

Google said the attackers were trying to collect user passwords through
phishing in an attempt to change forwarding settings.

The company has disrupted the attacker's campaigns to take users' passwords
and monitor their email, said Google.

Early last year, Google revealed that it was the victim of a "highly
sophisticated and targeted attack" originating from China that led to the
theft of intellectual property from the company.

Google has pulled out of China since the initial attack and began to
redirect Chinese traffic to its Hong Kong-based site.

In March, Google accused China of blocking its Gmail service.

Shares of Google were falling 0.1% to $524.87 in after-hours trading
Wednesday.
