i think it's important for people to have a chance to process what's
happened. their work on their notes, i think, is one way to help sort
things out for later storytelling. i've always been a big fan of the simple
'one sheet of posterboard summary' gallery approach that i think you
discovered.

sometimes when trying to decide how much tech and documenting we really
need, i tell clients that the simplest possible proceedings is just a list
of the issues raised. the point is only to have something of a stake in the
ground, on the paper, for informing the next round(s) of invitation, if it
wants to go on and on.

your comments here remind me that the simplest possible proceedings document
is probably a list of the participants!

Dear HO and all of us other techies,
to me, OST is the best way I have encountered in my 4 decades of working
with groups, organisations and systems to expand the NOW in the "real-life"
situation itself.
That keeps intriguing me...especially because of what I see happen under
conditions of self organisation unfolding unhampered: productive fun,
unheard of ideas, instant solutions...you know the rest.
So, every thing or process that infringes on focusing on the NOW, including
all kinds of technology and even paper and pencil (look at the story John
Engle told of OST in Haiti)reduces the effect of everything that can happen
in the expanded NOW.
If, and I have seen this happen regularly, there is passion and initiative
leading to action, it will show up. I yet have to see the effect of
"planned" documentation or "technology" on action after an Open Space event.
When I leave my house in Berlin to enter a bus or a subway to go shopping
or to meet friends or go to a restaurant or to a gathering or to a church
service or to a party...I always, yes always, run into someone that I either
know or am approached by with something like "do you remember...xyz...os
event?" In the ensuing minutes I always hear stories about what happened
after an event of which nothing is found in the documentation and which is
lost in the mysterious jungle of selforganisation that we seem to somehow
want to control...often these contacts occur years after the event.
Have fun at your next OST event!
Enjoy keeping it simple.
Greetings from Berlin

I am reminded of my good friends at Microsoft who brought together several
hundred of their senior folks to redesign their data centers. Needless to
say I left the electronic support to them, and they assured me that it would
be “state-of-the-art. I am sure it was (SOTA) – but there was a small
problem. Didn’t work. Back to paper and pencils! – but eventually I
suggested that we might just try WORD templates with finger drives. Worked
like a charm, as always.

I am definitely in favor of charting new courses and trying new stuff,
indeed the first Open Space was documented on the predecessor to the
Internet in 1985 (DARPANET). And lord knows there is wonderful new stuff out
there. So have fun, but don’t throw away the pencils and paper. Could be
useful in emergency (smile).

Subject: Radical Real-Time Annual Unconference "Making the Most of
Collaborative Worlds” - Saturd ay, June 5, 2010 from 2pm to 5:30pm

Hi:

Maybe I have missed it but, if I saw correctly, I could not find in this
list any post concerning this event that took place last Saturday. I could
not see it previously advertised here, nor commented afterwards, even if I
saw there a lot of people that are in this list.

So I am resending to the list the initial advertisement, that was posted
in the events section of the OST NING (http://openspaceworld.ning.com/)
and some comments to it. (Maybe I should have done that before, but I was
busy preparing the session I convened in that "Unconference", with a lot of
last minute problems, like my local network, dying some minutes before the
event...).

Any how the unconference was very interesting with a lot of sessions
offered and a lot of conferencing products tested. Anyone can still see the
sessions offered, many summaries of the session and even some full recorded
sessions.

Event Description

You are cordially invited to take part in the second annual Radical
Real-Time Conference on Saturday, June 5, 2010.

Radical Inclusion is once again pleased to provide the platform for this
self-organized virtual unconference. In our last year’s unconference
participants felt that the burning issues of the 21st century could only be
solved by using new collaborative methods, changing the ways we work
together, and finding novel approaches to co-operation. Thus, this year’s
conference, titled “Making the Most of Collaborative Worlds – Physical,
Virtual and Blended Collaboration”, focuses on understanding the changes
that are required at individual, team, and organizational levels to deal
with these issues.

We are also announcing a new name for the conference, Radical Real-Time.
It reflects our radically different approach to collaborative engagement.
Thank you Christina Jordan for coming up with the name! We feel that
“Real-Time Virtual Collaboration (RTVC)” taught us much during its first
year and has deserved this new forward-looking name.

The purpose of the Radical Real-Time unconference is to provide a global
forum where we all can come together, explore topics of common interest,
learn, and create sustainable actions. Our unconference structure is loosely
based on the principles of Open Space Technology, which has revolutionized
large group gatherings by allowing the passion and responsibility of
relevant stakeholders to drive the conference agenda. Radical Real-Time
participants will be able to explore topics most important to them, and
convene breakout sessions using a variety of virtual tools. Besides
proposing a topic of interest, session conveners may also choose the
collaboration platform of their choice. If you are a newbie to the use of
virtual tools, the Radical Inclusion team will be on hand to provide
technical support. Radical Real-Time conference is free of charge.

This was the feedback of Harrison Owen, the inventor of Open Sace
Technology on our last year's event: "That was a great tour of a marvelous
adventure! Cyberspace IS Open Space. And the Internet works exactly the same
way as every Open Space — totally self-organizing. I think what you are
doing is identifying various aspects of the Internet that make the whole
experience more useful. Sort of like finding new rooms in the venue, Temple
Bells, Talking Sticks, etc."
