I like this “Elder” bit. But you can see the self interest as it rolls by. All
that said, creating space for calling forth our history and how we feel about
it (history) is critical. If you don’t know where you came from, it is really
hard to figure out where you are going. And besides, if you listen to the
Elders you may discover you are already there… or something. Or even better –
you been there, done that, and it is time to move on! J

Subject: Eldership and Elder's stories

Hi Alan,

I like this initiative around elder's stories. Out of our annual Devoted and
Disgruntled open space I called a session: "Honouring the Elders" and since
then we have moved forward on what we are now calling the "Improbable Eldership
project." This will be a project which begins from open space events but will
ultimately be a show or ceremony which celebrates the often unnoticed Elders of
our theatre and performance community. We have already held one two day open
space which was interesting as although it had topics around such issues as
"Death" and "Hair dye" was also the open space in which I heard more laughter
than any other I have ever facilitated.

Quite Joyous.

Dear All

With respect, the issue at hand was the wondrous graphic and how it may be seen
to fit with the previous postings by Spark and others on a quirky cosmic
perspective of our human presence.

As it happens, to insert the illustration I used a link to an article in which
I report an encounter at the farther reaches of human boldness ... <smile>

See here
<http://www.timegoesby.net/elderstorytelling/2011/01/an-encounter-with-a-guy.html>
for what set this off, what transpired and what a delightful and inspiring
story is now carried forward.

My reason for this pursuit? To gain a deeper understanding of how one person
has made enabling and encouraging 'participation' by people an art form and his
raison d'ete.

On the premise that we live in a participatory universe. By this I mean that,
from the time of the early Greek philosophers, people have sought the secret of
participation, '...the courage to be and the courage to become ...The Idea of
Participation is a true gift.'
'The Participatory Mind' by Henryk Skolimowski

Did the people of Tunisia come to recognise this?

And is it also expressed in the words of the full version
of an iconic freedom song as sung here ?
<http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5KnYADCSms> Did the people behind the
protests now happening in Wisconsin and around the nation in the US hear these?

Dear Phelim,
Alan did not send the graphic but the link to it

which is a true and tested method in OSLIST.
What OSLIST does gobble up are attachments... BUT it makes exceptions.

I have attached the graphic to this mail, let me know whether it came through.

Alan,

New depths of knowledge! I think you might be the first person I've seen
ever manage to send a graphic to the OSList. It usually eats them! It
must be part of the unknown universe and slipped through. Phelim :)

Dear All

The graphic below may be seen to be in tune with what Mr Spark and
others here have ignited.

I now bring it to people’s attention in my work as a facilitator of
conversations that matter and participatory fun for it suggests very
poignantly our place in the scheme of things.

Said a participant:

“The ‘You are here’ diagram is a wonderful tool for getting things
into perspective."

It comes from a book /Where Have All The Flowers Gone/ (a singalong
memoir) by folk singer and environmental activist Pete Seeger.

I wonder how this simple diagrammatic statement of our place suspended
in the midst of dark matter and dark energy resonates with you? <smile>
