Raffi, Another perspective, slightly different from Harrison's, is that all the world is an energy field of possibilities. This might be called open space, and yet it is not empty.it is pretty full. As skillful facilitators of OST, we have some knowledge of how to use our roles to create a container in that field of all possibilities to allow probabilities to emerge. The strength of the container is important as is the clear role definition of the facilitator, as Michael Pannwitz has said. It is a position of influence to be used wisely and well.
I think humans have always known that we have this field of possibilities and that life is about making choices in that field. I am curious about the choices you will make in this soup of possibilities that you are in. Raffi - I think you've got it. At the very least you are confirming my experience that all the years of opening space (OS) prepares you well to see space opening wherever that happens. I guess the skeptic could say that when the only tool you have is a hammer, all the world look like a nail. Probably true, but I think this may be the exception that proves the rule. All the world is Open Space - we just didn't quite notice it before. Of course that doesn't mean that everything is open, free and delicious, for we all know of closed, dark, nasty places. BUT it COULD open, and that is the promise. This promise is realized in the Arab Spring, and presently in OWS. None of that will last for ever, nothing ever does. So I guess the secret is find a rhythm - open/close/open. Maybe that is what we do? The open space lens has been soooo valuable in framing how i see and act during occupy san diego. For example, our General Assembly has not been an effective decision-making body for a variety of reasons, including - as best as i can see- police infiltration. And how have people dealt with that? Use their two feet!! You'll see people breaking away, forming their own circles, and talking about what's really important. And I'm just amazed in the midst of all the fractiousness (which, it sounds like is largely a San diego phenomenon), there is such a high level of listening and openness to different perspectives. I also don't cease to marvel how a facilitative presence (call it guerilla facilitation?) can really amp up the quality of the conversation. This is where I've found my groove thus far-- not in any formal facilitation (i formally facilitated a committee meeting today finally- at the invitation of others)- but just listening, jumping on dissident/divergent perspectives and trying to draw those points of view out. It's seeing how the circle keeps on popping up that i think we're doomed to succeed (don't ask me what success means!). also-- a shout out to sandy heierbacher (or anyone else on the ncdd list)--- can you forward/pass on the following message: if there are any ncdd members in san diego, i'd love to get in touch with you, so that we can have a greater facilitator/process artist presence at the occupation. can someone let me know if you do post this to the ncdd list? (feel free to share my email with the ncdd list). much warmth, raffi powered by ubuntu 10.4
