Birgitt and Chris;
Your exchange on ethics and the perspective on reiki has fueled many
thoughts. It takes courage to put such deeply personal out for the rest of
us to read, ponder and react to. It takes courage to put out any of our
learnings, especially when we are new to a practice. It opens us to
criticism, praise or to the most deafening of all....no response.

My own learning experience with how deep people can be opened was not
related to open space technology, but to using process facilitation methods
that are congruent with OS (See Birgitt's web site
www.openspacetechnology.com). I taught a university class using facilitation
methods as I would in my consulting practice. Open space was not appropriate
in the setting. Classes started with a transfer in exercise that gave the
students a time to reflect on an object and what it said about the theme of
the class that day. Students followed individual reflection with discussion
with one other. The next step was to see if anyone wanted to share their
insights to the larger group. One student told me angrily how deeply the
exercise had taken her and she did not want to share the depth of her
thoughts. It reminded me that it was important to point out more clearly to
people that they were not required to say anything and that they should only
share what they felt comfortable with sharing at any point.

I start almost all meetings this way as it helps people be fully present to
whatever we are doing. But I am also concious of the sacred trust that we
carry and the power of the processes.
