Actually, I thought that the learning to drive story was a wonderful illustration of what happens when we underestimate the intelligence of someone whom we are teaching or to whom we are explaining something.
People are usually far more capable of acting independently than we give them credit for. A brief explanation of the use of stop lights would have armed the girl to use her intelligence to make judgements that would have kept her safe. She would have used the break herself. Instead the teacher told her only what he thought she needed to know, not foreseeing her need for further information. It was disrespectful on his part. The beauty of open space and the way we open it, is that we give people all the information they need and then get out of their way. It's very respectful.
