MAVIA (Mothers Agains Violence in America)is a wonderful organization that has a partner group, SAVE (Students Agains Violence Everywhere). SAVE is planning their annual conference, which often draws 300-600 students. Traditionally they have had a keynote speaker, panels, a few breakouts. Their goal is to empower youth and help them become catalysts for change. I believe Open Space would be the ideal format for this -- but I am not sure if some of the constraints of their situation will allow for it. So I am seeking counsel from this wise group and vast pool of experience!
1. The group is large, the time is short: They have a Saturday meeting schedule for 12:30 to 5:30. They are hoping for 500 participants -- give or take a few hundred. Would it be worthwhile? We could squeeze in 3 x one hour (or 2 x 1.5 hours) -- and then have 1 hour opening/ 1 hour closing... 2. How would a closing work for such a large group with such a short time (one hour)? 3. Have others done an open space for youth (middle/high school) ? With such a large group? Is it needed/wise to have adults in each session? How does a mix of adults/youth work? (I tried to look this up in the archives, but I don't seem to understand how to nagivagate: is there a way to look through time at the threads -- or do you have to open each month? don't know which month(s)to look at) 4. If not Open Space -- can you suggest any other way to get away from the panel/expert model to help empower and engage these youths to develop their activist/leadership learnings and energy.. SPECIAL NOTE TO COLLEAGUES in the Seattle/Tacoma area: Want to help create this??? Help!
