Hi Esther: The Glass Bead Game is the central game in Hermann Hesse's book, Magister Ludi (sometimes the book is called "The Glass Bead Game"). In the book, there is no formal description of the game, but it is a mind game requiring immense research abilities and the mastery over several fields of expertise. The object is to draw connections between things, such as between the frequency of D notes in a Mozart sonata and the equations that determine the rate of growth of a starfish's limbs. That sort of thing.
The idea is to draw connections between as much human knowledge as one can, and in so doing, an intricate structure is developed. The role of the game master is to set the challenge and essentially hold space while the players draw together the pieces. Occasionally the game master has to make a ruling on the acceptability of a submission, but the book itself is about one game master and his psychological engagement with the role. There are many internet sites deveoted to the book and to similar games that have been developed in the spirit of the glass bead game.
