My experience with working with large groups is that defining the task is very important and that it is important that the right people be involved in defining the task. Would it be possible to get together a small planning group that is a microcosm on the whole -- the group that will be doing this and affected by it -- and work with them to clarify the appropriate task for the Open space? You will then be convening this OS with the tools of OS. It is easy to isolate OS principles to the OS conference itself. One critical value in the work is the extent to which these principles become imbedded in the thinking and process of the organization or community as a whole.
