Thanks for the Newsletter Peggy & All: Here is a brief story from this Saturday. Judy Gast and I worked together on this one as we had on a previous such event with this group.
"Strangers" often appear at the most powerful Open Space events as many of us have experienced. On Saturday and Sunday (Oct 18-19) 250 tenant leaders and 150 staff gathered in Open Space from Toronto Community Housing -- one of the largest public housing organizations in North America (recently merged). They were exploring how to implement the local councils and to identify the cross company issues and issue groups to be developed. We had a hard time finding a space and had to change at a last minute. As it turned out, the same day the space was booked the victorious Provincial Liberal Party booked the space next door. It was sheer synchronicity. The chairperson of the TCH board was just elected as one (lowly) member of the new Provincial Government. So, the Premier elect (aka Governor in the US) paid us a visit. The timing was crucial -- it was in the middle of the lunch break, perfect as it did not impede the OS discussions. He said all the right things. The OS would have been seen as extremely successful even without that -- it was thrilling for the tenants because of the Premier's commitment to social housing which he articulated well. One tenant told me that his buss ride home to their housing units was flying high -- folks were excited and engaged. (As for the convergence on day 2 it was good as well -- but not the same emotion. The new software for concatenating files that my son wrote for me made it possible for me to use Multi-Vote with 15 computers and the graphing software on XP.)
