This brings my mind the impact of OS on practice of democracy...hmm, even human
rights...
Democracy, because OS encourages equal participation and empowerment
Human rights, because it can bring the authority and the neglected and the
disadvantaged together, challenge the existing structure and open some space
for the latter. I am thinking of minorities...or indigenous people...or street
children (OS that Peggy Holman did in Colombia)

These are significant works...and I can imagine democracy and human rights are
two hot topics for academic researchers...

hi marty.

thanks for inquirying about research.

my colleagues and i, with the help of an economist and anthropologist from
mcgill university in montreal, have begun first steps in an impact
evaluation of our work in haiti. this is going to be a long project.

here's a paragraph from the document we've created to serve as a springboard
for further reflection among our haitian colleagues:

"We wish to understand whether and how the practices of Reflection Circles
and Open Space affect institution building. We feel this is important
because formal institutions such as public schools, judicial systems, police
departments, mayors' offices, hospitals, libraries, fire departments, NGOs,
etc. along with informal institutions such as neighborhood watches, bible
studies, and other community groups, are considered essential for the
building of civil society and are a major focus of foreign aid programs in
Haiti. The development of peoples' participation in institutions is a
measure of civil society's evolution."

i welcome thoughts/remarks/suggestions!
