I don't think the processes in the earth (Gaia) allow much quiet now and the trends (which are very hard to predict but don't look good) won't either. My wife, Becky, that some of you have met, works in an Environmental Studies Faculty where these issues are on the table, like the dead moose, all of the time. Melting ice caps, increased lung cancer, bird flu etc, etc, etc are all connected as are their potential economic impacts. Canada has on of the highest per capita uses of energy even thought it has approved and is supposedly working on Kyoto.
However, Chris, it is easier in BC to reduce your foot print and harder where its -20 on a regular basis. Her master's students, when they begin to "face facts" or at leas the current evidence, have some real grieving to do. Grief Work is happening all the time. Funda there is good evidence and experience that women respond differently to their environment than men. The difference is part of mosaic that might help us find some things that work. To be the ebb and flow of "quiet time" is part of what I need to be able to open and hold space. But quite may be connecting to "no-thing" which actually generates some possibilities for what comes next. A nice (pro-bono) opportunity "emerged" for opening the space for a geographical community in Toronto to explore in .5 day how they could be involved in "Clearing the Air" -- Reducing their carbon footprint. The student from Environmental Studies who got this going decided that opening the space was the approach she wanted to use and the community leadership agreed. It should be fun and make a little contribution.
