Some folks need to see things in relationship, so I add a twist of color to help some visual people like me be able to see the patterns of time. My colleague Zach Metz sometimes uses the grid for very particular instances. He and I have been over the years exploring slight design changes for his work in very high conflict zones (such as Northern Iraq). His experience is that - for example in that Northern Iraq setting - a matrix actually helps people feel there are boundaries and edges - order to their work - when the world outside the room is literally exploding.
