Saul Alinksy wrote a seminal book called HANDBOOK FOR RADICALS and organised the back of the (stock)yards movement in Chicago in the late 1940s. He founded the Industrial Areas Foundation and trained, among others, Cesar Chavez, who formed the National Farm Workers Union in California in 1965.

Alinsky's philosophy was to work with whatever issues were considered important in the Community, not unlike the OS Marketplace. He was against ideologically driven radicals who had their own agendas.
