Hi Faye - sounds like an exciting adventure...
I'm going to be in Belfast from October 7-25 and wonder if we (and
any
others in the area) might wish to catch up for a yarn about how
you're
using Open Space in the country of my birth....sounds fascinating.
Cheers

Subject: Belfast Open Space Day 3
Hello Friends of Open Space,
What a joy it has been to be a part of this safe space that we
have been
creating together in Belfast! We are on day three of seven and
today I think
we all began to get into the groove of how to function together in
an "open
space".
We have spent the day furthering our theme of "Creating a strategy to
unstick our passion... so that it sticks" by putting our
discussion from the
previous day into action. The morning brought a time to review,
followed by
a time to implement our discussion into action points.
There were many ideas that we will put into action, here is just a
glimpse
of what we will be doing:
1. A Northern Ireland Passion Political Party (yes, that is NIPPP for
short!)
2. A monthly email reminding participants to live and work with
passion
3. Simple get-togethers that encourage us to "be" and not "do"...
We felt the process of putting a days worth of thoughts and ideas
into
points of action gave us a real sense of accomplishment and of
freedom. The
rest of the day carried a much lighter weight and the following
discussion
seemed to have an ease about it that the previous day did not. One
of the
reasons that the conversation felt lighter, we feel, stems from
the sense of
trust that was developing among us... We were beginning to trust
the process
and each other...We were becoming pros at navigating our open space!
The remainder of the day we split into break out groups to discuss
the
questions and methods of open space.
Closed by our usual time of evening news and an invitation to share a
smoothie together at the local coffee shop, I think we all left
with a
better understanding of the process and each other!
Peace,
from your friends in Belfast

Subject: Training Wheels
Hi--
When people say Open Space will not work chances are they are
looking at
the wrong end of the tool. The shape of the handle, the grip by which
you pick it up is less important than the business end. The
business end
is working together premised upon a trust that ordinary people can do
work that matters. How you pick up the tool—the market place,
the wall,
the circle—is of less importance.
So open space is not so much circle, bulletin board, market place:
it is
mainly the last three words that we so often do not hear: get to
work.
If this be true, then....
Are the training wheels in the bulletin board and the market place
and
even the circle? Is the call to get to work the thing?
:- Doug.

Subject: Place and Open Space: NEW FUN IMPORTANT The semi-annual
Poetry Celebration and Contest!
Last week I introduced the new poetry celebration and contest. But
I forgot one thing! It's the FORM that makes it FUN to write a poem!
So try this: Start with the letter "A"
And start each new line with the next letter of the English
alphabet: B, C, D, E, and so on. The poem is over when it's over.
Anyone can write a poem
By opening two red doors.
Capture an experience that shook your life;
Describe the red ripe tomato on that summer day, the first you
ever grew, then
Eat it! and let its sweet seeds spill down on the page
For us;
Grab a napkin and laugh.
NEW THEME:
You may write about a Place and Open Space -- but let's expand the
theme to why it's IMPORTANT to write a poem:
Share an experience with open space that shook your life.
If you want to write in a language other than English, you may use
your own alphabet (if it's a different one) - in any translation,
the English translation does not have to follow the form. If you
don't use an alphabet, I trust you to confine yourself to a form
like this in the original poem.
CONTEST GUIDELINES
1. You may write as many poems as you wish, in any languages.
Original work only please.
2. Send them directly to me
magic.te...@hotmail.com
OR, send it (them) to the OSLIST.
3. If you write a poem in a language other than English, please
also provide an English translation, as best you can (we know that
poetry does not always translate perfectly.)
4. The deadline for entering a poem to the celebration and contest
is September 30, 2008 at midnight California time.
5. After September 30, I will compile all of the poems into an
email, without the authors' names attached, and post them to the
OSLIST with instructions on how anyone on the list can vote for
your favorite poem(s.) The author of the poem that receives the
most votes will become our new Poet Laureate until the next
celebration and contest.
If you have questions please let me know!

Hi friends in Open Space
I think I may have a record here! Wednesday night, the night before =
opening
space for 300+ people, I fell off a ladder at 4 meters hight (or
the =
ladder
slipped off the floor) =96 and I managed to open space on the next =

standing up to that?=20
=20
Can I get my certificate now, HO?

Do you agree that it is nice to get the posters really high up?

Please take care next time & have someone holding onto the ladder

Dear friends in Open Space/GC
The passed days I opened space for 2 full days for a +300 group (as
mentioned in an earlier record-announcement).=20
=20
Before the event my sponsors were quite nervous because two of the =
expected
participants were well known from several other occasions for
disturbing =
and
even going to personal (verbal) aggression. I calmed them down
sharing =
that
OST allows space for people to do what they need to without letting =
anyone
taking over the space =96 and that people usually treat each other
well.
=20
Before starting one of them came up to me asking where we were
going to =
show
pictures/powerpoints =96 and I, of course, said there would be
none.=20
During the event these two persons raised two topics (one each I
think) =
and
both were very well visited, about 20-40 participants, lively =
discussions,
and as I heard very respectful and good ones. The first afternoon
one of
them spent a quite long time at the computer station writing the
first
report. He was not so used to writing on computers so it took
quite some
effort. The next day they were writing the report together, very =
thoroughly.
=20
In the late afternoon of the first day quite a few of the
participants =
had
left early, but they remained. After evening news they stayed on a =
little to
help the sponsors=20
with some minor practicalities.
=20
In the prioritization process one of their topic were on 4th place.
=20
At the closing circle on day two they shared the following: Person
one: =
This
is the first conference where I haven=92t seen people going to
sleep. =
Person
two: At first I thought, what is this consultant (paid lots of
money) =
going
to try to do to us? But then...this was such a great way of working
together....
During the Medicine Wheel reflection one of them shared thoughts =
regarding
vision =96 she thought that the visions where already there, but
this =
was a
great way to agree on common visions.=20
=20
One of the sponsors came up to me afterwards quite moved and
shared some =
of
her thoughts regarding the magic of what had happened to these
persons =
=96 AND
to others who all of a sudden showed them respect and treated them
as =
fellow
humans...
=20
Open Space Technology works in many magic ways =96 and I am
fortunate =
and
honored to open space to wonderful people like this.
Thanks for being on this journey with me
Warmly
=20

Wonderful Thomas - do you think your fall was so light -

Subject: OS-facilitator record? X-posted GC/OS-lists
=20
Hi friends in Open Space
I think I may have a record here! Wednesday night, the night before =
opening
space for 300+ people, I fell off a ladder at 4 meters hight (or
the =
ladder
slipped off the floor) - and I managed to open space on the next
morning =
-
after a visit at the hospital. That must be a record? Or anyone else
standing up to that?=20
=20
Can I get my certificate now, HO?
=20
Do you agree that it is nice to get the posters really high up?
=20
Please take care next time & have someone holding onto the ladder
- I =
was
sooo lucky!
=20
Warm regards
Thomas=20
PS. If you want to break the record, I have some advice. I had a
very =
brief
stop-over at 2 meters where there was a handle-bar (not that I
noticed =
but
anyhow ) which probably saved me from worse injuries than some
pain all =
over
my body. So don't even try! DS

Hi. . . I'm catching up on oslist emails. . . . I also read your
email,
Jeff, in which you ask for a-b-c poems.
I am overwhelmed by all the rules and criteria. It doesn't feel very
open-spacey.
I guess you are 'in charge' of this poetry context but as a full
member of
this list, I invite folks to write and submit any poems using any
format
they like.

Do the qualities of the place affect what happened in the open

you give an example?
These are the questions that I invite you to write about - in the
form of a
poem (or poems) - in this month of September. Welcome to the Semi-
annual,
Limited-form, OSLIST Poetry Celebration and Contest!
This time, the form is limited only by the theme. You may write
any kind of
poem, of any length, around the theme of Place and Open Space. If
anyone has
another question (like the questions above) that can help us to
write poetry
about this theme, please share it!
Sharpen your pencil, limber up your fingers, look longingly into the
creative fire, drink deeply of the luscious stream of intuition,
soak your
toes in the mud of earthy rich feelings, let your mind bask in
the nurturing
breezes of metaphor and wordplay!
I look forward to your contribution to our celebration.

CONTEST GUIDELINES
1. You may write as many poems as you wish, in any languages.
Original work
only please.
2. Send them directly to me
magic.te...@hotmail.com
OR, send it (them) to the OSLIST.
3. If you write a poem in a language other than English, please also
provide an English translation, as best you can (poetry does not
always
translate well.)
4. The deadline for entering a poem to the celebration and
contest is
September 30, 2008 at midnight California time.
5. After September 30, I will compile all of the poems into an
email,
without the authors' names attached, and post them to the OSLIST
with
instructions on how anyone on the list can vote for your favorite
poem(s.)
The author of the poem that receives the most votes will become
our new Poet
Laureate until the next celebration and contest.
If you have questions please let me know.

Celebration and Contest!
Thanks for your perspective Tree.
Of course anyone can offer any poem they like. Just as, no matter
what the carefully crafted theme of an Open Space may be, people
will post whatever they feel passionate about, or bring it up at
the coffee table.
I could have explained better that the original tradition of the
OSLIST Limited Form Poetry Celebration and Contest (some 8+ years
now) has been to suggest a Limited Form, which offers people a
kind of framework to use in order to compose a poem.
We have had Limited Forms such as 17 syllable haiku; 21 words
only; and one of the early ones (was it the first?) in which every
word had to start with a different letter of the alphabet, all 26
words in alphabetical order!
I will be very happy if ANY poems about open space are written,
which is what I care about, in the role I am playing.
Warmly,
Jeff

Hi. . . I'm catching up on oslist emails. . . . I also read your
email, Jeff, in which you ask for a-b-c poems.
I am overwhelmed by all the rules and criteria. It doesn't feel
very open-spacey.
I guess you are 'in charge' of this poetry context but as a full
member of this list, I invite folks to write and submit any poems
using any format they like.
