I like that --- You open space by simply asking a question. Of course it is crucial how the question is framed. Many mediators consider open-ended questions (the ones you can't answers "yes" or "no" to) their most important task . Every time they (or we) ask an open ended question, they open space, sometimes within the person who may not have considered some aspects of their position before. Some mediators do also use closed questions (where the answer is yes or no) but these questions certainly don't open space. In fact we can open space anytime we interact with other people by being curious and mindful of the questions we ask. Just a thought. I've done it many times with real success -- good discussions and higher energy than table groups or other more guided discussion formats. There will also be more information about the nature of the group that will emerge. To me, this is still not the ownership and vitality that comes from multiple rounds of self-organization where clearly the group takes responsibility for the meeting. In 1 to 2 hour stretches, in most settings, the facilitator is still seen by the participants to be "in charge". It is when the facilitator is gone for most of the day that the "oh shit" moment happens.
