After taking michael's wise counsel in 2001 Laurel Doersam and I found one less thing to do for the social part of osonos 9. We simply phoned up a nearby pub and told them a large group would be arriving to drink and eat together. Everyone paid their own bill and the pub was delighted to have a crowd on a Sunday night. They even set aside a whole section for us to mingle in.

Michael is obviously a man (person) after my own heart. I certainly enjoy all the bells and whistles that happen at OSONOS, and deeply appreciate the effort that goes into the whole affair. That said, I really do believe everybody is working much too hard. Having done 6 of these critters (the first four OSONOS’s and 2 more OSONOS’s by the Sea) I can tell you that total planning time for the first one m ight have been 10 minutes – consisting mostly of deciding if I reall y wanted to do it and what the theme might be. I wanted to roll and the theme was obvious: “Opening Space in our lives and our world: Is sues and Opportunities.” That theme worked pretty well which thereb y reduced the planning time to “0” for the next 5 gatherings. Logistics and promotion took a little longer, maybe 24 hours total. As for the “Conference Fee” – I found the $25 was more than sufficient. Actually for the last two OSONOS’s I ended up sending ab out half of the collected fee to Lisa for the Access Queen’s Fund. S o anyhow it is simple and it is doable. Most of all Have Fun! And of course, think of one more thing NOT to do.

sheila isakson and i hosted osonos7 in chicago. our main model for that was osonos4, hosted by harrison. and my counsel to every host- to-be i've talked with since then is, first and foremost, to remember that this is open space we're talking about, so keep looking for things to not do.

we booked a single meeting room, where free coffee was available in an adjoining room, plenty of public space nearby for breakouts to spill into, lots of restaurants in the immediate vicinity, close to downtown sightseeing places, and moderately-priced hotel rooms on site. (a hampton inn in downtown chicago). we pointed invitees to a budget hostel option a few blocks away as a cheaper sleeping place. after that, it was nothing but markers, postits, paper, bells, and computers. simply open space. sliding scale, same as harrison, i think, $25 to $200. we lined up a few plates of hors d'ouvres for the evening before, which was simple hanging out, watching people trickle in from the airports, tipping a few drinks from the hotel bar, and saying hellos. i don't remember that the total prep took more than a day or two, spread over several months.

i've always thought that part of the job of hosting osonos was to make it look just that easy, the way harrison did at osonos4, to show (especially for new practitioners) just how simple it was to run a big deal in a little bit of open space. a simple invitation: a single meeting room. some basic supplies. and an opening briefing. everything else is strictly optional, and less is still more.

there is the bit about registrations and such, but i always thought that was just a lot of chatting with friends from all over, and keeping a simple list of who said they were coming. hosting was great fun. and great learning. i'd recommend it to anyone.

i know there's a certain charge out of naming one "world" osonos each year, but i do wish we as a community made it easier for more than one of these to happen at once. i've always wanted to see simultaneous events on several continents. i wish we could have less emphasis on making a show of this place or that place (and choosing only one of them) and more emphasis on who (even if it's many people) is interested in stepping into the simplest responsibilities of hosting and opening. and then if we have many hosts, they can work together on sharing marketplace wall postings and how to post all the notes into teh same online place. i think with skype and other tech we'd now have easy ways to have video of world-around breakout sessions, where small groups on several continents could be meeting face-to-face in single sessions. i suppose this strains the traditions a bit, but i think it'd be worth trying, as further experiment and demonstration of what's now possible in an increasingly open space world.

Dear Lisa and host team to-be…

Being one of the presenters for WOSonOS in San Francisco on behalf of Lisa and her host team – I can just ad – if you are not able to be there in person – make sure that those who represent you have a good “show”/offer – because then it is so much easier to be the stand-in. Lisa had provide us – Thomas and me – with a “whole show” J and it was so fun and it was easy to make the offer irresistible!

Have fun!

Other memories of how Host Teams invited us to future WOSonOSs...

Thomas Herrmann and Eva P Svensson (Sweden) inviting on my behalf in Kiev - they got the whole group participating being the San Franco - and- they made a little doll to represent me

Brian Bainbridge and Viv McWaters creating a map of Australia on the floor and Brian standing on different areas in Australia to give us a sense for the diverse country and culture, while we all snacked on candies with koalas on them

For those of you who have been to past WOSonOSs - what else do you remember from lovely invitations to host WOSonOS by other international colleagues?

I look forward to hearing your stories,

Lisa
