Hi, all.
It's been a while since I checked in, but this item brought back strong
memories...and that feeling of being dated...and fond memories of Ralph.
Ralph and I worked with Barbara on the session she described. They were
in New York and I was in Indiana...no cell phones or easy way to send
documents by e-mail (anyone remember DOS?) so, as Barbara and Harrison
describe, faxes were spewing and people were huddled and full of
anticipation. :-D :-D
I refer to this session often when explaining the potential power of
OST, as well as the meaning of leaning into resistence and trusting the
process (for both me and the client system). It was a powerful learning
expereince for everyone involved - especially me.

us (you and me). But it worked, and maybe a lot better than some of the
Hi-Tech wonders I have seen recently. I did something of the same sort of
thing, and what I noticed was that there was a definite air of anticipation
as folks huddled around the spewing FAX -- waiting to see how the "other"
folks were doing. Somehow the FAX seemed to run at a more human speed and
definitely built up expectations. Not unlike kids waiting to open Christmas
presents!

Space
I worked with a new business organization that was a spin off from a very
large traditional organization in Niagara Falls some years ago. A week
before the one day OS to talk about how they wanted to be as a new
organization, they remembered that they had a manufacturing plant in Indiana
and asked if there was any way to involve them that didn't involve plane
trips.
I called a colleague who lived within driving distance of the plant and we
ran two simultaneous OSs, one in each venue. We faxed the newsroom reports
back and forth and when we did some dot voting at the end, all the reports
were available.
Two days later the top 50 senior team met and made plans using the data from
the Open Space. They loved it and they are still going fine!

Hi all,
I got a question from a friend, Tom Atlee, who has two spaces, about
10 minutes apart for an Open Space. My response to him follows. If
you have any suggestions to add, please share on the list or directly
with Tom at .
may thanks,Peggy
Tom's message:
I'm not sure yet how we will use this extra space or deal with
logistics of a 2-location Open Space (separated by about 10 minutes
walk, 3 minute bike or drive, with ample parking at both locations).
I would prefer to hold the initial gathering at Campbell Senior Center
if there is enough room, even if people have to stand crowded together
- and to have EWEB for breakouts. But I can also imagine using
computers or phones to track what people in the other location are
convening, enable parallel Opening sessions and providing breakout
spaces at both locations, with all session postings visible at both
locations. At the very least we will need a facilitator/space holder
available at the EWEB property. (Peggy: Have you ever heard of such a
thing being done?) But at least we have a safety-valve if our
100-person space is overwhelmed with 50-100 new people.

Hi Tom,
I'm aware of simultaneous OS's over great distances. They used
technology to post the sessions happening in the different locations
and share notes. There has even been some coordination in more recent
ones using Skype so that people could attend from afar. That's not
quite your situation.
I've done several large OS's (including the one with street kids in
Colombia) on school campuses where the rooms were a bit of a hike. We
used one main room to open the space and rooms all over campus for
breakout sessions.
If you want me to pass the question to the OS listserv, I can.
appreciatively,Peggy
