Going for a walk is a pretty good way to expand space, or as some say, make more space... going for a walk is in some ways similar to taking a break and there are stories around the origin of OST emerging from breaks...

lets all have some more space today

So far, the survey says mostly yes. And lots of learning about pre-work

'control, denigration' etc that Jon notes.

One 'distraction' failure i found was an informal group of 15 who posted
tons of topics and found no good way to choose how to address them.
Usually in this kind of agenda, combining topics makes sense of it, but
on this day twas all a jumble. We all went for a walk instead, and in
that sense a success emerged from the ashes.

I don't know what the person in Dan's story actually was referring
to, but I have a hunch that they were referring to the fact that, as
far as science can tell, there is no amount of physical space that
is entirely occupied with physical particles (of the sub-atomic
persuasion or otherwise) with no space in between them, and
conversely we can guess that there is no amount of space that is
completely void of particles. (This can only be confirmed as the
frontier of science continues to go deeper below the atomic level.)

So, if this is true, then we can say that in the physical realm,
there is no totally open space and no totally closed space; only
relative degrees between the 2 extremes as we scale or descale our
frame of reference (or "Container" to borrow a metaphor from the HSD
    model.)

It gets even more interesting as we apply this axiom to the
cognitive realm, which is to say that if we cannot be absolute in
holding space open, then how much is enough or not enough to suit
our purposes? I believe that our results will tell us, and the
amount may vary depending on the theme, setting and event attendees.

How much distraction is endurable, while still allowing growth,
    creativity and transformation?
How much external control, denigration of individuals, conflict and
anxiety is enough to nip these fruits of open space in the bud?

Aren't these the things which the facilitator endeavors to hold at
bay, to create a clearing for something new to sprout and flourish
    within?

We would need some failed attempts at Opening Space, which were
markedly unfruitful, to demonstrate such a threshold (how much or
how little is enough) to answer these questions.

Now, that sounds like an unpleasant experiment to design and
conduct. However, if anybody has inadvertently stumbled on the
answer, I would love to learn vicariously.

Till then, let us also say, "There is no such thing as fully closed
    space."

I like the term 'opening space' -- endeavoring that the space
        be a little
(or lot) more open than before.

Maybe the practice is a lifelong one, of opening the space a bit
        more in
each cycle of day, week, month, or year, etc.

Really deep folks might tell us when the space will be
        completely open
again - in a zillion years - or maybe in this moment?

I like that Jeff! Having just returned from the land of the ?Tao
te Ching? ... where following The Way leads to nothingness.
Clearly, real open space happens when you stop working so
        hard... or something.

After 5 wonderful days with colleagues in Beijing, I find myself
smiling as the jet lag recedes. For a gift I brought my friends
a copy of Chris Corrigan?s ?The Tao of Holding Space.? I offered
it with a smile, knowing from whence the Tao had come. Sort of
like carrying coals to New Castle. Or Tulip Bulbs to Holland. Or
        perfume to Paris... Or...

I told my friends in Beijing that, for me, the Tao te Ching was
the most wonderful guide to holding and opening space. It was
written (to the best of anybody?s knowledge) about 1200 BCE.
That would be better than 3000 years ago. Been around for a bit.

        Hello dear Space Openers,

The other day I was talking with a collegue who is an university
        staff
member here in La Paz. I told him (what follows is a result of
        my daring
ignorance) that most of the development in social sciences and
        human groups
evolution study is closely based/related onto Isaac Newton's
        Universal
Gravitation Theory and the emerging laws that are being refined
        until our
days (quantitaive change and analysis and so forth). Well, the
        time is
appropiate for a change or shift and we are thinking now in terms of
relativity, as Harrison wisely said. Acoording to the ancient Greek
Mythology, passion was represented by the god Eros when he
        contributed to
the creation of the universe from Chaos, that was the first
        thing to exist:
So, Chaos is the origin of everything and is also an initial
        stage in the
process of opening the space. The universe is infinite or it
        expands?
Anyway, we are all relatively expanding ourselves; the space, as the
universe is and will be opened. The question we are discussing now
demonstrates this. Are our minds an Open Space?

Have a big hug from Bolivia.

        Dear Colleagues -

The OSLIST Poetry Contest is open once again! If you feel so
        inspired,
please create an original poem using these three guidelines:

        1) The poem is about Open Space
        2) The poem consists of 8 lines or less.
        3) The poem contains all 26 letters of the English alphabet (or
        all the
letters of the language you write the poem in) at least once.
        If your
language does not have an alphabet, then you can skip/ignore
        this guideline.

*Send your poetry directly to me (not to the whole list) at
        [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]>
        <[email protected] <mailto:[email protected]>> before the end
        of Sunday, November
        22nd.*

I will collect the poems and then show them back to you
        anonymously, dear
readers - so you may indicate your favorites - even though this
        is not a
game of favorites. It is a gift of riches. It will, however,
        tell us who
our new Poet Laureate of the OSLIST will be - someone who will
        hold the
space for poetry by sharing and/or inviting poetry on our list
        for the next
        six months.

All of you OSLIST members, including past Poet Laureates, are
        invited to
participate. If you write your poem in your own language which
        may not be
English, please do add a translation in English.

I welcome all your fierce and quiet words,

        Lucas Cioffi
        Current OSLIST Poet Laureate
        Charlottesville, VA, USA
        - with a deep bow to my fellow Poet Laureates

        - - - - -

A little history, from Chris Corrigan:

Dear list friends and colleagues in Open Space and Genuine Contact!

I?m working on a possible research project in the health sector
in municipalities to find out how Open Space and The Genuine
Contact program can be a resource in enabling a shift in the way
of leading and solving the tasks with growing challenges and
        reduced resources.

My question now is if there is some relevant research that you
know of from the Genuine Contact program or Open space
technology for us to refer to in out application?

        All the best from
        Hege Steinsland

While I was having fun with Mrs. Song and all of her guests in
        Beijing, a
funny thing was happening nearby. It seems that the Mercedes
        head office for
China was having a big do and some significant part of it was
        all in Open
Space. I only learned of it when two gentlemen, whom I didn't
        know, dropped
by. One was from Brazil, and the other from Italy and they were
        somehow
responsible. Talk about not having all the facts! But I do know
        the Mercedes
gathering was a pretty big deal, if only because the Mayor of
        Beijing was
present. And that was just the tip of the iceberg because then
        the Premier
of China showed up. And of course the Press was in attendance.
        Anyhow the
evening news (Chinese TV version) was replete with the Premier
        in Open
Space, surrounded by the appropriate signs, I'm told. Of course
        I couldn't
read them, but I did see the pictures.
