Dear Rosa, I did a program which included many people with disabilities, including visual and hearing. This challenged me to really think about what was appropriate and how to structure the program and the space. Some insights included:
- Be very careful with the use of language. There has been a lot of work done on respectful and inclusive language. It is well worth reviewing current usage with the organizers and participants. - "*Nothing About Us Without Us!*" (Latin <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latin>: "*Nihil de nobis, sine nobis*") is a slogan <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slogan> used to communicate the idea that no policy should be decided by any representative without the full and direct participation of members of the group(s) affected by that policy. This is an important concept in the disability rights movement and can be a good design principle in organizing a program. - I found myself organizing the space so that it was easy to find where groups and activities might be taking place. Work with the participants to identify potential physical issues and seek to remedy. - Consider how you gather the issues/topics. The traditional circle can be challenging so you can consider giving participants the paper/markers or you could gather directly. - and, as always, *"Be Prepared to Be Surprised!"* Mark Pixley LEADERSHIP INC Facilitating Organizational Change in Greater China 86-755-8211 1366 86-186 8895 0841 skype: mjpixley On Mon, Apr 10, 2017 at 6:48 AM, Rosa Zubizarreta via OSList < [email protected]> wrote: > Hi there OS folks... > > anyone out there ever hosted an OS event that included folks with > significant visual impairments? > > I would love to hear about any accommodations you may have devised, > especially for the Village Market Place... > > thanks so much! > > (p.s.
