Dear Gerardo,
thanks for your way of introducting the Law.
Would love to read more variations on this!
Here is how I used to do it:
"Then there is a law, also called the law of mobility or the law of two
feet: "I honor a group with my absence when I neither learn nor
contribute anything."
If I learn something, I stay; if I contribute something, too. But if
neither is the case then I do the group and especially myself a favor by
taking my two feet and moving somewhere else where it is more productive
- or take a nap.
You know this from people who are in groups: you sit together and then
you notice that someone shuts his eyes a bit. And it becomes clear that
this person is no longer quite present. And it would be a good idea for
this person to go away anyway. As soon as the person starts snoring, you
know he has missed the opportunity to leave.
Ok, make sure that when you neither learn nor contribute something: look
for another place.
This law of two feet has several tempting advantages: One is that I am
always somewhere where it is productive and interesting. The other: It
is a wonderful medicine for know-it-alls, all-rounders, long-term
speakers ... when one after another disappears and he sits there alone.
And then there are two appearances, created by this law: bumblebees and
butterflies ...."
Since 2012 I have not introduced ost at a gathering. Probably I would
shorten it, leave something unsaid. What I would certainly still do, is
to walk the circle and look into everyones face... I am pretty sure,
that what I do aside from speaking is essential to introducing...
Take care and come to Berlin in October for the WOSonOS and a walk
around the Kreuzberg...
ciao

That's how I introduce the law of two feet:
It's a natural law. It's something that happens all the time. It's not a
rule you have to follow, it just happens.
All the time we find ourselves in a situation in which our body is in
one place, our head in another.
When this happens to you in an open space you have two feet and you are
invited, as far as possible, to use them to reconnect your body with
your mind.
You can join another group, you can stay at the coffee break and keep
drinking and eating, you can even go home or back to the office if
that's there your head is.

Looking at the two clicks that Gerardo mentions it takes to leave an
online group, I think thats also the two things implied by the Law: if
you neither learn nor contribute, look for a more productive place.
Now, as far as I can see, this also applies to analog groups of two
that
some of us are confined to. If you neither learn nor contribute, make
sure to leave that group. It does not imply looking for another
group, I
could turn into a butterfly, for instance, and be all by myself for a
while or forever.
The version that Chris has in his blog
“if you find yourself in a place where you are not learning or
contributing, find somewhere where you can.”
is new to me.
If you neither learn nor contribute (2 things), look for a more
productive place, not a place "where you can". The more productive
place
might be on a dancefloor, in the swimming pool, gardening all by
yourself, fishing is also great, reading in a book, walk in the forest
or even join another group or something else, there is no prescription.
Thanks to the virus I have all the time in the world for these
musings... and love to read blogs which I never did before even
considering getting another book...
Greetings from Berlin
