Firt of all: Why are you still on 1.8.3? These kind of settings will not be backported, especially not as since 2.0 the rendering.xml is heavily adapted.
However, it can also be that this issue still occurs in the current 2.3.5 with the current rendering.xml so please share examples, the good ones and the "bad" ones, with us so that others can try to check/reproduce.
