I suppose you tried to download the France_address map. I just did the same and for me it works fine. Or did you download another map?
And yes: When you search an address you do that by selecting the appropriate map. Like you would for Brest in Bretagne or Freiburg in Baden-Würthenberg.So you need to select the address map. As an address is actually a set of coordinates, it will be displayed on the "normal" map. However: I do think that my address maps will no longer be necessary as soon as the 2.5 version comes out. The 2.4 stable Google Play version has already the first version of that search, but the 2.5 (to be released) will be a big improvement. I'm currently on the beta-builds (not the nightly builds) and they come with the "universal search" screen. - You type for example "Ulm, Villenstrasse 11" and it will find it for you. - Or you simply type a street (with number) and it shows you the possible options starting with the one closest to you. In that case it will also show the POIs. It will not show you the address but the street and when you tap the street it will show you the possible housenumbers (when available). Searching on street alone will be very inaccurate unless there would only be one "avenue de baupaux 1" in your downloaded maps. This is a huge advantage and a huge jump forward. You don't need to select a country/map, or a sub-country map, or a city. If you search for "Paris, Avenue des Champs d'Elysees" you need to have the (sub-)map of Ile-de-France on your device of course.
