I figured out what was going on. The marker's location points correctly but is *relative to the compass* even when the view setting is "north always up" and seems to only work properly in portrait mode. This can make it pretty confusing and difficult to interpret on a motorcycle. Using "direction of travel" or "compass mode" makes more sense, but moves around more when riding bumpy roads, which also makes the screen less legible.
A workaround suggested by Bart Eisenberg is to change the navigation service setting to "straight line" (Settings > Navigation Settings > Navigation Service). Though I haven't yet tested this, I expect this approach to be more legible while riding the moto and useful in the "north is always up" mode.
