I seem to have really messed up this thread. Here is the amended text of the message I deleted.
"This seems to only happen when a large app such as Firefox is loaded. In this case Android is terminating the background activity instance of osmand to free up resources. It looks like osmand does not catch the onSaveInstanceState callback and save its current state properly." Paul, Yes I have tried turning off location in Android settings and that does fix it.
