Standard maps contain all the map details, not needed for navigation, but
useful for outdoor, city orientation or map exploration.
Road-only are almost like it says: road only plus minimal set of not road
related details. They contain all navigation information plus some non road
data as bonus. They are much closer to typical road maps
of dedicated car navigation devices ( TomTom, Garmin, ..)
or applications (Google maps, Waze, Here etc). Using them may lead to
better application performance.
If you use OSMAnd just for road car navigation, use road only map.
If you use it also for universal map usage, as e.g alternative to a paper
city/tourist map,
use full standard map.
They can be combined as a set, but there is no sense to have both active
for the same area.
Note that sometimes there is choise for the whole country versus region set
maps. The former can be quite big and may impact the performance.
OTOH, if you go just for a region subset, it may be a challenge for
strangers to choose proper regions.
Again - either regions, either the whole country, not both.

I often could download both Standard map and a Roads-only map.
It is not clear to me if I need both or if it is enough to just download
the Roads-only map or as an alternative to just download the the Standard
map?
