You can do it if you first save the route as a track, display the track 
using My Places, and then use the Split interval function.  My video on 
GPXs shows all this, albeit for walking, but the same idea applies for

Note that the Directions menu recently changed, but you can still save a 
route to GPX format using an icon in the Details submenu.
