Thank you for your reply. As I was retaking the steps in order to reply, I 
found that in the Favourites menu from the sidebar, where favourites are 
listed by group, in the 3 dot menu for each group, under the "Display on 
the map" switch (which *was* already on), there is a "Remove/Add from/to 
markers" button. I don't know how it was ever activated but clicking Remove 
was enough to get rid of the flags and have my stars back on my map.
