The magnification setting enlarges or reduces the map without changing anything else. Whereas the zoom setting adds or subtracts map detail as you zoom in and out. The (+) and (-) buttons change the zoom. A long press on either is a shortcut to the magnification setting. You can use both settings in combination to produce the map display you like.
