I occasionally use Osmand for hiking and was originally staggered by the battery drain even screen off. However I didn't use it to navigate, just to check my position now and then. I discovered that returning to the home screen before turning the screen off made a major reduction in power use. Returning to Osmand again later it would quickly satellite lock and show my new position.
In this mode of course it will not announce turns because Osmand is dormant, but can show progress along a calculated route which has not yet been started.
