I'm not sure I have the same problem. But basically I stopped using 
autozoom because at highways is does not give enough overview to see 
whether instructions make sense, e.g.
* instruction to leave the highway only to return to it almost immediately 
because it saved a few meters (shortest route option) but results in 
idiotic waste of time.
* instruction to return to on intermediate route point (inserted to handle 
long routes) because I interupted navigation and osmand doe not mark such 
intermediate points as 'passed'.

Actually, I think it makes more sense to use road type instead of own speed 
to determine autozoom levels.

So I use  manual zoom which is a pain but safer and more informative.
