I have had it for years on SD-card. But I also move it around sometimes. You also have the "shared memory" option where "everything" is put on internal memory in "/storage/emulated/0/osmand". I use that when I want to test new functionality in some OsmAnd Nightly build, without having to download another large set of maps (and I have my gpx tracks at hand). Just say no when asked to move the data in the additional OsmAnd. Or like now where the 3.5.5 has some really serious errors in the profiles, which "forces" me to use a nightly build where these errors have been fixed already.
And when everything is OK again I remove the nightly and copy everything back to SD-card (SD-card: 64GB, internal memory: 16GB).
