I have done this, but I continue to have problems with the settings reverting. My basic issue is that I am in the US but want metric units. With driving region set to auto, it seems to reapply the US default of feet/miles/etc. at times. So I switched my driving region to Canada, on the theory that Canada is metric with similar driving rules (but surely much more polite than Boston!).
