Sorry if I'm stating the obvious, but it can be worth playing with the map magnifier in cases like this. (In "Configure map" or long press on one of the +/- buttons). E.g. if you go to zoom 11 and set the magnifier to 25% you can see a large area, still using the detailed map under control of the *.render.xml file. Rendering gets very slow...
