I ended up changing the text in the gps file so entries that were 
<rtept...  I changed to <trkpt...  I also had to change some of the text at 
the start - which I just copied across from an known good gpx.

I was then able to change the colour in OsmAnd. It was a painful process - 
hopefully I can work out an easier way in future.  I ended up with a really 
wide line and the line colour options weren't great - red was the same 
colour as some of the roads on the base map - blue same as the direction 
arrow - light blue same as the rivers .......

>From my research it seems it probably works a bit better in Android.
