I hopped onto this group because I was looking for more info on why OSMAnd wouldn't work on my new phone. I really wanted to disable all the google play-store backend junk [which the phone actually let me do!] and not have to use google's "new" API for getting location information. The stock OSMAnd build claimed to be switchable between google-mode and the old native Android API, but neither would bring up the location icon on my phone. After like three days of thrashing around with this I finally went with the F-droid build, which actually works as I'd expect. It didn't at first, but after clearing everything out, rebooting the phone, and a ground-up reinstall, it does. Without "google play services" or any of that other junk running at all.
It was a freaking nightmare, and it's upsetting that the OSMAnd team seems to be knuckling under to Google more and more as time goes on.
