I hopped onto this group because I was looking for more info on why OSMAnd
wouldn't work on my new phone. I really wanted to disable all the google
play-store backend junk [which the phone actually let me do!] and not have
to use google's "new" API for getting location information. The stock OSMAnd
build claimed to be switchable between google-mode and the old native Android
API, but neither would bring up the location icon on my phone. After like
three days of thrashing around with this I finally went with the F-droid build,
which actually works as I'd expect. It didn't at first, but after clearing
everything out, rebooting the phone, and a ground-up reinstall, it does.
Without "google play services" or any of that other junk running at all.

It was a freaking nightmare, and it's upsetting that the OSMAnd team seems
to be knuckling under to Google more and more as time goes on. They really
need to take the page from F-droid and use the native API exclusively.
