Just to close the loop...Thanks to Skip's link to rtl_fm here on the list, I've finally managed to get my dongle working, and am happily listening to my local FM station on my computer now :-)
And now that I'm sure my hardware is working, I can start to explore the osmocom software seriously. Thanks for the help!
