I tried finding another source of osm-data, but I haven't found anythig yet. 
openstreetmap itself only alows dumps of less then 50k nodes, and downloading 
the whole planet file is a bit of overkill (+ it wouldn't fit on my hard drive 
anymore).

So I guess i'm stuck trying with the cloudmade file, in which case brett's 
proposal still is the best idea yet...if it would work properly. I still 
haven't figured out how to get that idea working, and I hope someone could help 
me further out on this!

I deleted the first line of the file, which started with <xml. The first line 
is now <osm version="0.6" generator="Osmosis 0.31.1">, but the same error 
persists.
