Any indication what the reason might be? If run on a full planet, this
can easily take a few hours.

One further question is what command to use to merge a planet file with the
update file?
That would then be
--rxc update.osm.gz --rx planet.old.osm.gz --ac --wx planet.new.osm.gz
But again, that will take a while. If you have more than one hard disk,
things can be improved by having it write the new file to another disk.
