[OSRM-talk] How is profile.lua used in the osrm-prepare?

Can someone explain how and/or what in the profile.lua script is used during osrm-prepare?
It seems to be required, but looking at the Processing Flow wiki page (that is somewhat dated) there is no mention about how it is used.
