It appears to me that supporting another DAC is rather trivial on that basic driver, since all interaction there is with it is just setting the volume registers. I'd like to try out my theory, but am right now hindered by that device node issue, that prevents the driver from working. The question is whether the PCIe bridge causes the fuzz, Solaris, or the SunOS framework of OSS.
